Orphans Win Three on the Weekend
|
The Orphans had a very good weekend, picking up a league win on
Sunday and winning their Good Neighbor Days Tournament on Saturday
night in front of some very nice crowds at Memorial Park. The Orphans
opened up the Tournament with a win over the Atwater Chuckers on
Friday Night. Aaron Demarais picked up the win for the Orphans and
Moose Streich and Andy Gagnon teamed up to provide the defensive
play of the game on a play where a runner tried to score from second on
a base hit. Moose threw a pea from center and Andy was able to hold
on despite a collision at the plate.
In the championship game of the Tourney, the Orphans avenged a loss
against Holdingford in last year's tournament by winning 10-0 in five
innings. Andy Gagnon threw the shutout for the Orphans as the bats
came alive in the win. Andy was named the Tournament MVP as the
Orphans won the tournament for the first time since 1997.
The Rockford River Bandits visited Memorial Park on Sunday as the
Orphans returned to North Star League Play. The River Bandits put up
a good fight, but the Orphans were able to squeek out a win 4-3 in 10
innings. The highlights of the day was the return of many former
Orphans on Orphan Reunion Day as well as the induction of Don
Mitchell into the North Star League Hall of Fame. Congrats Don and
thank you to all of the former Orphans for making it back.
The Orphans record currently stands at 14-5 overall and 9-4 in the North
Star League.
Orphans Lose a Close One to Monticello
|
Per usual, the Orphans and Polecats of Monticello fought it out
right to the end on Wednesday Night, with the Polecats prevailing
3-2. The difference in the game was defense as the usually
reliable Orphan defense broke down, committing 4 errors which
yielded all three Polecat runs. These two teams will meet again on
July 6 and likely will see plenty more of each other in the playoffs.
Orphans Take 2 of 3 on the Weekend
|
The Orphans traveled south last week for three games and came
away with two wins. The Orphans beat the Minnesota Lake Royals
on Friday night, 7-5. Ben Borrell led the Orphan offense and Aaron
Demarais picked up the win on the mound. Saturday's first contest
matched the Orphans against the defending state champs from
Blue Earth. It was a tightly contested game with Blue Earth winning
6-5. The last game of the weekend saw the Orphans defeat Lake
Crystal by a score of 6-1. Steve Miller threw a one-hitter in the
Orphans victory.
The Orphans record currently stands at 12-4 overall and 8-3 in the
North Star League. The Polecats of Monticello will visit Memorial
Park on Wednesday in a much anticipated matchup of the leaders
of the Western Division.

score of 5-4. Aaron Desmarais hit a three-run home run in the
8th but the Orphans were unable to capitalize on some good
scoring opportunities in the 9th.
The Orphans travelled to Hamburg on Wednesday
to face the Hawks and walked away with a 6-3
victory in a rain-shortened contest. John Stueven
led the Orphans hitting attack while Shane Heber
picked up the win on the mound.
The Orphans travelled to Monticello on Wednesday night
and were beaten soundly by the Polecats, 9-3. The
Orphans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the big bats
of the Polecats proved to be too much. The loss gives
the Orphans an overall record of 15-6 and 9-5 in the NSL.
